last weekend seven inches of snow fell. two days ago more snow and then ice covered the landscape. i decided to venture into the fourteen degree air and tromp through the neighboring woods to capture the ice covered trees and shrubs. i pulled on my boots, and on my way out, grabbed a hatchet from the garage to knock the ice off a fountain i leave flowing year round. after hacking the ice from the fountain i crunched over the snow and ice into the woods with my digital camera tucked inside my coat next to my chest. a few dozen photos later, my fingers were barely limber, and i made my way home. on the way back i approached the hatchet, handle thrust into a snowbank vetically so i would not miss it. a moment of seeing shape and contrast seized me, and i photographed the hatchet. picking up the hatchet i impulsively placed it on the old barn and photographed it. these are the photos that followed.
