the tall ships started the “atlantic challange 2009” race in Vigo, Spain. the first port visited was in the canary islands. they next sailed to bermuda, staying for several days before continuing on to charleston, boston, halifax, and then finishing the race in belfast. val and i had planned a vacation in bermuda the very week the tall ships were there, unbeknownst to us. our friends john and essie hans very kindly took us on the water in their 33’ cabin cruiser to watch the tall the ships sail along the north shore, past fort catherine and head for charleston. the sky was gray and the water very choppy, but that did’t stop the many dozens of boats from seeing the majestic tall ships resume the race off st. david’s head to charleston.

“I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.”

From "Sea-Fever" by John Masefield, (1878-1967)
